Substantial

Everything I see these days when I’m shopping seems really unsubstantial these days. Everything is thin, sheer, polyester, cheap. The reasoning is that fabrics are getting more expensive so quality is sacrificed instead of price, but I wonder if that’s just an excuse. I’m not liking it, so I’m far less willing to pay full price anymore.

J.Crew silk cami // J.Crew necklace // J.Crew featherweight cotton cardigan // Anthro Scalloped Stripes Ponte Skirt (Girls From Savoy) // Gap classic ballet flats in surf blue

I made the exception for this J.Crew silk cami because I love the colour and it’s a fantastic layering piece, but it’s so delicate that I’m afraid to tear it and therefore afraid to wear it. (And according to one comment, the quality is much worse than it was a few years ago.) So it’s a piece I bought because I want to wear it a lot, but I’m not going to because I don’t want it to wear out too fast. (My thoughts: grrr.)

At least this skirt is thick and substantial and has a nice heft to it. So much so that it stands on its own.

I’ll call it sculptural art in the corner of my bedroom.

  1. I've been actually pretty obsessed with this skirt and all its colorways because it's such great quality. I love the pic of it standing up on its own LOL! Looks better on you, though!

    1. Better as a skirt than art? :) The stiffness made me pause to think about it, but I'm glad that I picked it up!

  2. I love that tank. I do the same thing. I worry that I will ruin something because it is too delicate and then don't wear it. We need to shake hands and agree to just do it! : ). I have two of those skirts and they are so awesome. I have a post going up soon and I mention it standing on its own. It is too funny that it does that. But it has awesome structure. I agree with you that that skirt was worth it full price. I got my second one 75% off, so together that makes them fifty. Right? ; ).

I love your jewelry and the cool white cardigan. You look so pretty. That food flashing in the corner is killing me. Killing me. I am starved and sober. Dieting sucks.

    1. I like your thinking when it comes to buying at discounts! That makes sense.

Sorry about the food flashing on my Instagram...time to remove it so I don't make you hungry??

    1. The sizing isn't great it this skirt...isn't it XS/S and then M/L? It's a tricky skirt, and I wish it were a little less stiff. I don't think it is a universal skirt at all.

  4. Lol When I first started reading this, I thought you were a bit delusional calling everything cheap and insubstantial when I know that skirt is stiff as all get out. Then I got to the "But I make an exception for this skirt..." bit, and I felt a bit sheepish. I agree with you on poor fabric quality, though. I'm seeing it everywhere, and if something seems too delicate or like it might not wash well, I'm so hesitant to buy it. It's frustrating. Everything is sheer, too! I just can't handle it. Hopefully fall brings more substantial fabrics.

Your outfit, by the way, is completely lovely. I love the color combination, the mix of stripes and solids, and the glitzy statement necklace. Gorgeous!
